The rehabilitation of the house in Coruche is the response to a couple moving from Lisbon to the countryside in search of a quieter life in contact with nature.
When they bought the house, they realized that the existing structure didn’t fully meet their needs and so this renovation was born in the middle of agricultural fields.
To adapt the house to their needs, an extension was designed that integrates modern elements with the original rurality.
The use of arches on the façades throughout the design of this project not only gives the house a classical reminiscence, but also allows for the creation of large openings that maximize the entry of natural light, providing a sense of continuity between the interior and exterior spaces.

A rural routine

A new way of living abroad

Throughout the project, the arches develop a way of shaping the exterior area from the point of view of the interior space.
Their use makes it possible to conceive the awned connection in the building between living areas (indoor/outdoor), as well as between kitchen and dining areas.
This extension increases the functionality of the house, but also provides the new inhabitants with a welcoming environment adapted to their new daily routine.
Balancing rurality with contemporary architecture.

A new routine, a different context

The extension of the house in Coruche was conditioned by local council legislation. This context required a balance between the need to increase the functionality of the space and the restrictions imposed by the regulations. The project had to ensure that the modifications respected the legal limits, while maximizing the use of the available land and meeting the expectations of the owners.

With the introduction of a new routine that includes work, family life and visits from the children, the house was designed to offer continuous and integrated common areas. Built-in and built-in furniture was designed to optimize the space.

To maintain the connection with the countryside desired by the owners, the extension incorporated a wooden structure into the new roof, which now has a hipped roof. The combination of rustic materials and the new shape of the roof reinforce the feeling of rurality that was paramount to the owners, ensuring that the rehabilitation of the house respects the original identity while responding to the current aspirations of the new routine.

Unique Features

  • Integrating the contemporary into the rural world: The project balances contemporary elements with the original rural structure of the house. The choice of arches on the façades demonstrates this concern, bringing traditionality to contemporary architecture.
  • Use of the Arch: The arches are a significant element in the entire project, not only because of their aesthetic characteristics but also because of their approach to functionality. Allowing openings for natural light to enter, improving the brightness of interiors and promoting a fluid connection between internal and external spaces.
  • Treatment of Natural Light: The openings provided help to optimize natural light inside the house, creating environments that can be experienced by its new inhabitants. This characteristic is fundamental to improving the quality of routine, especially in the field.
  • Outdoor area: Designed to balance leisure and farm life, it includes a leisure area with sofas and a dining area.
  • Adapting to the routine of its future residents: The extension was designed with the specific needs of the couple moving to the countryside in mind. The villa is designed to meet the aspiration of a more peaceful life connected to nature.
