This project in Monsaraz, Alentejo, was requested by a couple of Brazilian and French origin who were looking to rehabilitate an old pigsty. The intention is to turn it into a house with large areas and the possibility of tourism. The location on Monte Alentejano offers the ideal setting for a rural tourism project, providing tranquillity and contact with nature.
With a careful approach to the original architecture, the project aims to create a space that combines comfort and functionality. The integration of modern elements with the rustic style of the Alentejo will result in a unique property, attracting tourists looking for an authentic experience. Rural tourism in Monsaraz will benefit from this new addition, promoting sustainable development and the enhancement of local heritage.
When the new meets the existing
When the new meets the existing, we design a glazed building that contrasts with the rigid and completely orthogonal lines of the original building. This curve in the architecture brings an element of modernity and contemporaneity, creating a dynamic movement to the ruin. The integration of old and new reflects a biased approach to preserving history while adding new value to the building.
In the center of this space, we positioned the fireplace, a central element of traditional Alentejo architecture. Historically, the fireplace was the heart of the home, providing warmth and being the meeting place for families.
Around the fireplace, we developed the social and common area, designed for moments of conviviality and interaction. This social hub not only respects the center’s origins in traditional housing, but also promotes a contemporary environment where all users can enjoy moments of sharing.
